Katie Wolken, DDS, MS
Dr. Katherine (Katie) Wolken earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from The University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Dentistry. After completing her doctorate in Kansas City, Dr. Katie moved to St. Louis and practiced as a general dentist for 8 years. Eventually, she realized that her true passion in dentistry was endodontics, also known as root canal therapy. She went back to school and completed her Masters of Science at The University of Louisville, specializing in Endodontics. Now, this Missouri native is back home and is working to dispel common misconceptions about root canals, and helping her patients leave the office relieved and pain free. She is extremely sympathetic, since she herself has struggled with dental anxiety.
In high school, Dr. Katie suffered from a tooth that was giving her a lot of pain. When she visited her family dentist to have it extracted, he encouraged her to try to save it, explaining that it would be much better for her long-term health. She took his advice, underwent root canal therapy, and still has the tooth today.
That experience gave her the spark to pursue a career in dentistry and endodontics. It also set her apart by giving her a better understanding of her patient’s perspective and concerns. Now, at her own practice, Dr. Katie takes pride in relieving patient’s pain, saving teeth, and educating them about oral health just as her childhood dentist once did for her!
Family Life: Dr. Katie is married to a general dentist, Dr. Andy Wolken (whom she met in dental school) and together they have three children – Drew, Amelia, and Josie – who keep them very busy outside of the office. Dr. Katie and her husband both have a passion for mission work, and they volunteer with Give Kids A Smile and Missouri Mission of Mercy (both in St. Louis), providing free dental care to those in need. They also enjoy traveling abroad to provide dental care to desperately underserved families. Together, they’ve been on Christian – centered dental missions in Africa, Guatemala, and Belize, and are eager for their next adventure!
